What to do with leftover fruits? When cleaning out the refrigerator, one would generally come across pieces of fruits and lots of other ingredients that are still edible.  The odd pieces of nectarine, peach, apricot, grapes, half a small tub of kalamata olives, cucumber, and the mango – apricot fruit cheese I found in my fridge did not go unused.

Leftover or not I mixed all ingredients and made a bowl of yummy dessert.

My Kids’ Lullaby

My father, together with many allied Filipino guerrillas, fought alongside United States forces against the Japanese in Mindanao during World War II.  He joined the Fertig guerilla unit and earned a position as Lieutenant. During the Liberation he served in the Army that assisted the American operations in Davao and in Cotabato.

My mother came from a military family. Her father was a Staff Sargeant in the Philippine Constabulary.

Both my parents love music and can hold a tune.  The lullaby my parents sung for us to calm and put us to sleep is a song from the war years which goes like this.

USAFFE, USAFFE, USAFFE Serenaders
Join the Army
May surrender
Escape in November

I rocked my three children to sleep with this lullaby, singing about a story that is part of my parents’ story.  I remember this lullaby from when I was young, and kept this song in my head to pass on to my children.
